King James Bible: Idioms-3 (The Apple of his Eye)
Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 05:46PM "The apple of his eye," an expression which is still used in Modern English, refers to a thing or person which is somebody's favorite. This phrase is used several times in the King James Bible. The first place is in Deuteronomy:
Deuteronomy 32:10~11
In a desert land he found him,
in a barren and howling waste.
He shielded him and cared for him;
he guarded him as the apple of his eye,
11 like an eagle that stirs up its nest
and hovers over its young,
that spreads its wings to catch them
and carries them aloft.
12 The LORD alone led him;
no foreign god was with him.
In modern English, "the apple of his eye" usually appears with another word in place of "his."
