King James Bible: Idioms-1 (My Brother's Keeper)

Many common English phrases and idioms come from the King James Bible. One of these is from the Book of Genesis: "Am I my brother's keeper?" "Am I my brother's keeper" is especially elegant because of the rhythm. Notice how short and long syllables alternate:

4:8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. 4:9 And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?

This last phrase has become an English idiom which means as God’s children, are we responsible for taking care of other people?
